What is African Dance Workshops?

To experience African dance is to truly step into another world. A rich vein of African tribal history flows through every continent, transforming each culture it touches with the powerful rhythms and soulful movement of its vibrant people. From the sun-blessed isles of the Caribbean and the carnival rhythms of the samba in Brazil to the vocal and literal gymnastics of the Bronx B-boys, the influence of Africa is everywhere, and following the tributaries back through time and place to their source brings us ever closer to the travelling groups and tribes of Sub-Saharan Africa..

We can give your school, corporation, charity or organisation an unrivalled chance to be entertained and/or educated in the various African dance traditions. Our experienced and authentic facilitators come from Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Zambia, South Africa, Cameroon, Kenya and Zimbabwe, so you are assured a reliable insight into African culture, ideal for Black History Month (celebrated annually in October) and cultural awareness days.

The number of tribes and regions of the vast African continent has given rise to a diverse range of tribal dances, from the unique phenomenon of gumboot dancing, to the many styles of Kenya and West Africa. Whatever the tradition being explored, the colourful and exuberant nature of tribal dancing is sure to have everyone on their feet.

In terms of education, children and adult will learn how the stories of individuals, couples and the entire community were told and retold through the medium of dance, supported by the ever-present drum. They will start to understand how African tribal dance did far more than reflect the group’s culture; in doing so, it also preserved its values and knowledge for future generations.

The different roles of men and women in African dance can be explored as participants compare the extravagant leaps of the men with the bent leg and body movements of the women. They will also learn of the importance of ritual African drumming in key occasions from births and deaths to various festivals, and how it functioned as a language, for example between gumboot-wearing miners in the gold mines of South Africa.

Stop! Before Booking Any African Dance Workshops…

Let me ask you a simple question… with so much choice on the internet how do you know you are getting 100% Authentic African drumming workshops at the best price, can all these companies claiming to be providers of workshops be relied on?

So before booking with someone else consider these questions below and you will realise 2020 Effect is the company of choice for any creative workshops nationwide. We just don’t provide workshops we provide an experience you will never forget.

  • Do they have CRB Checks, Public Liability and a Child Protection Policy in place to safe guard vulnerable people?
  • Are the workshops authentic? Meaning is the workshop a traditional based multicultural experience?
  • Can they provide you with at least 5 testimonials from various organisation’s?
  • Can they provide you with workshops in Dance, Drama, Music, Visual, Asian and African Arts to your requirements?
  • Can they deliver nationwide? If so are you sure they will turn up or cancel on you at short notice?
  • Do they have any credibility or do you know how long they have been around for?
  • Do they have a dedicated support team to help you coordinate your event?

Well if they can’t answer these questions above with full confidence we strongly recommend not using them quite frankly! We take pride and passion in every workshop we provide and you will not be disappointed.

You really don’t want to ruin your event or day by booking with the wrong company. We have seen so many organisation’s let down by companies claiming to provide similar workshops – so choose wisely.

D. Foster, Youth Worker – Walthamstow Youth Support Services, London.

The African Drumming workshops went really well, I was very impressed!! George was a fantastic African Drumming instructor and really motivated the young people, some of which had extensive additional learning needs.

The session were well structured but flexible for the y/p needs, and all the y/p engaged. The school has received good feedback from the y/p and the staff attending, i will forward this on if they send it to me. Thanks again, and we are still trying to arrange two more schools to be involved, i will be in touch soon for more African drumming workshops.

A. Williams – Principal Youth Officer, Devon St John Ambulance

We had a fantastic day on Sunday and I would like to say how marvelous the African Drumming workshops were. None of our young people have experienced African Drumming workshops before or anything like it before. We were all so impressed by the couple who came and managed to smile and be constantly enthusiastic all day! Thank you Trap Media and I will sing your praises to all from now on.

N. Bellot – Parent Involvement Coordinator – Family Action Surestart Roehampton & Putney

I’m not sure if Yve has contacted you since we had the African Drumming workshop on 24th October. But the session was excellent, the African drummer (Mohamed) was interactive, friendly and had the group engaged to the African Drumming Workshops. Many thanks for a fabulous African experience!

S Buck – British Music Experience – the O2, London

J Murphy – Melcombe Children Centre, London

Dear 2020 Effect
Suffice to say George lived up to the recommendation for African Drumming Workshops. The children had a great time and George was very willing to fit in with our needs (including working in a very restrictive space as the party proved so popular). I would very much like to book a African drumming workshop with George next year so will be in touch when the event is planned and hopefully he will be available.

I will pass the word around about George and will be in touch sometime in 2010.

F. Melmoe – East Surrey College – Surrey

Thank you for sending such amiable and professional workshop leaders (Origami and African Drumming) to us this week! Could you pass my thanks on to them, I have had nothing but positive reviews from all of the staff and students who had the chance to be in the sessions.

Kind Regards

J. Milton – Science Museum, London

Just to let you know the feedback from both our staff and the public about the African Drumming Workshops was very good, professional slick performances which were enjoyed by all.
